While I was attending Sheridan College for Art Fundamentals I had had a class called 2D drawing. In this class we were giving an assignment that would last all year with quarterly check ups. The assignment was simple; following an alphabetical pattern work in a sketchbook. So you draw an apple on the first day and a banana on the second and so forth during a seven week time frame until you have completed the alphabet. For the next seven weeks your theme might be animals or something of the like. Either way the prof checks that you didn't skip any letters, makes sure there is a reoccurring theme, and you get yourself a check mark for the quarter and a mark at the end of the year.
I on the other hand took a slightly different route. Instead of being boring and doing a different theme per alphabet I decided to connect the four alphabets together in a unified narrative. This was not looked upon well by the prof. Every quarter when we had our quick meeting he didn't get it. How could he when the story had no ending? He doubted my ability to pull it all together. I couldn't really blame him, during those meetings he was looking at the pencil sketch, the inking of everything was the final stage.
Turns out the sketchbook project held a lot or weight in the marking process so at the midpoint of the class I was put on academic probation because my mark was just under a pass in this class. I couldn't believe it. The only reason i was allowed to continue was because i was doing well in other classes. I was told to focus and try harder. I made no changes. In the end when he looked at the finished product, foam cover and all, my mark was bumped up from a fail to a B in a blink of an eye. I even had more drawings than the initial 4 alphbets.
I was originally going to post this an alphbet at a time, but instead here it is in its all its glory, The Green Jihad
